CSOs Reflections On CSW60: Strengthening CSOs monitoring and support for the implementation of agreed conclusions on CSW60 (Women and SDGs)

The sixtieth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW60) took place at the UN Headquarters in New York from 14th to 24th March 2016 under the priority theme “Women’s Empowerment and its Link to Sustainable Development”.

The role of Kenya’s women’s rights organizations in the entire follow-up and review architecture of the 2030 Agenda must be underscored. This is especially in leveraging their collective power and voice at national and regional spaces to ensure that the global commitments spelt out in the 2030 Agenda as well as outcomes of the CSW60 translate into evidenced local actions.

In addition, the much-needed role of harmonizing accountability mechanisms for the 2030 Agenda with already existing commitments relating to the respect, protection and fulfilment of women’s human rights, such the CEDAW, the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa popularly known as ‘Maputo Protocol’, Africa’s Agenda 2063 and Beijing Platform for Action, is one that women’s rights organizations must prioritize.

Key discussion points:

  • State obligations on global and regional commitments for women’s empowerment and gender equality.

  • Opportunities and challenges for effective engagement and representation in CSW processes and other global reporting mechanisms.

  • Correlation between women’s lived realities, Sustainable Development Goals and Kenya’s Vision 2030.

  • CSOs and parliamentary role to support the actualisation of Kenya’s commitments and obligations under CEDAW, CSW and SDG reporting mechanisms.

Invited Speakers:

Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs, Kenya Parliamentary Women’s Association (KEWOPA), National Gender and Equality Commission, UN Women and FIDA Kenya.

Format of Discussion:

A panel discussion hosted by FEMNET in a talk show style. The panel will contextualise and present outcome obligations on global commitments to the audience. This will be infused with a public dialogue, Q&A with participants engaging with the panel and the forum.
